Starting Out

The trail to French Valley and the Weir begins at the parking lot near to Doane Pond and Doane Valley Campground. You start out by following the Weir Trail through a shaded forest next to a flowing creek. You’ll continue straight through a junction and cross the creek and soon see a stone structure that was built to see if there was enough water flow to generate electricity. There wasn’t, but the stone weir still remains. Continue back down to the junction and go up into the grassy valley until you get to some stone outcrops. Look for grinding holes in the rocks. This is a great place for a break before headed back down the other side of the valley back into the trees and the trailhead.

Trail Features

  • Shaded Woodlands: Early sections of the trail provide shade under a canopy of oaks and sycamores, especially welcome during warmer months.

  • Seasonal Creek Crossings: After rains, the trail may cross small creeks, adding to the charm of the hike.

  • Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for deer, hawks, and lizards along the trail.

    Turnaround Point

The French Valley Trail doesn’t have a single “summit” or endpoint but offers several spots to pause, take in the views, and enjoy a snack before heading back. A common turnaround point is near the confluence of trails or notable rock formations in the valley.
